Another Hospital Situation (any Hospice out there-)
So the naked man story was kinda funny, quit smoking, well, this story is not funny and I didn't know how to handle it and I'm still freaking bout it. I work in food services while I'm in school, so most of my job has me going ALL OVER the hospital, in ALL ROOMS and in every situation (except the morge,Herbal cigarettes, they don't eat!)I was on the cancer floor, which I go to often and LOTS of the people get better and get to go home. Most are not in bad shape at all. Well, few nights ago I went to a womans room with a liquid meal (normal on that floor cuz lots are sick on their tummy). I am very sweet to them and try to get them to eat and have a "Happy Plate"! So, in a sweet singing voice I try to get Ms. Smith (not her real name of course) to eat. I say "wouldn't you like a popcycle Ms. Smith, it will be good for you to eat something".....I get nothing, Ms. Smith is glaring off into space with her eyes wide open, batting them and just...not looking right at all, she did not even know I was there I don't think. Well, being dence, I still try to get her to eat . When I realize that she REALLY ain't right, I go out and notify the nurse. The nurse looks at me matter of factly and says: "Well this is hospice, they are not supose to look right! She is nurse Mary's patient". Then off she goes. Now, there are not any signs that say hospice, all the rooms are the same. I go to nurse Mary, and tell her the woman in room #abcd just don't look right.I get ignored for the most part, she never goes into Ms. Smith's room (and sorry, but I wasn't about to go back in there). On my way home that night I phone my sil, she is an oncology nurse elsewhere. She explained to me the woman was "crossing over" to death. OH SHMIT! So, like, I am trying to feed a women a popcycle while she is crossing over!! I don't know a lot about hospice, but do know that it don't always mean death and sometimes hospice goes home and the person can get better. Where/what are the ethics and protocol on this? Poor Ms. Smith, hell, poor me....it put us both in a bad situation! My head has been messed up for days about this, shouldn't they train us about death and hospice? Or shouldn't the nurse have explained something to me? Any help out there?
